02The Diesel Desk / WA · survey methodology

One trade market has two distinct dimensions.

Western Australia's mechanical workforce is not one pay market. Employment type and work arrangement fundamentally change the economic offer. A permanent Perth workshop role, a residential Pilbara package and an 8:6 FIFO contract may share the same trade title, but they do not share the same hourly economics or tax reality. This guide treats Permanent workshop positions and FIFO site positions as separate, verified registers, and transparently preserves the salary basis, employment arrangement and known data gaps rather than turning every advertised figure into a misleading blanket average.

05The Diesel Desk / WA · reading the number properly

Package, roster and paid hours sit beside the headline figure.

A high dollar figure means little without understanding the trade-offs in overtime hours, tooling expectations, housing support, and superannuation inclusions.

01

Employment type

Permanent, ongoing, fixed-term contract, shutdown, casual and labour-hire are not interchangeable economics.

02

Salary basis

Base salary, total package, ordinary time hourly rate and flat blended rates cannot be directly equated.

03

Offer conditions

Tool allowances, OEM tooling supply, LAFHA, company vehicle and performance bonuses change real remuneration.

04

Role scope

Machinery complexity, diagnostics responsibility, component rebuild exposure and statutory tickets define the rate.

06The Diesel Desk / WA · quarterly review ledger

Scheduled reviews keep the survey current.

The WA mechanical employment market shifts with fleet program deliveries, mining maintenance budgets and major shutdown cycles. We review figures every quarter against active workshop briefs.

01

Direct brief verification

Check every advertised figure against live hiring briefs with WA fleet owners, OEM dealerships and tier-one mining contractors.

02

Package structure validation

Separate superannuation, overtime components, tool allowances, LAFHA and vehicle fringe benefits from the pure base rate.

03

Coverage gap rule

Where reliable like-for-like data does not exist, acknowledge the coverage gap rather than fabricating a synthetic average.

Integrity Rule

If an advertised role blends supervisory duties, field service and workshop management into a single rate, it is quarantined until like-for-like role evidence is established.

07The Diesel Desk / WA · roster impact matrix

Roster rotation dictates fatigue and true hourly yield.

Evaluating a FIFO offer requires balancing gross annual cash against the hours spent on site and the personal toll on family and recovery time.

01

Gross income

2:1, 14 on · 7 off

The traditional high-income benchmark. It carries a material fatigue and retention cost that should be considered alongside base pay.

02

Retention

8:6 / 2:2, equal-time rotations

Often offers a lower annualised outcome than 2:1, but is increasingly central to attraction and retention conversations.

03

Project intensity

Shutdown, often 3:1

Short-term and labour-hire engagement terms can change the real hourly economics. Compare paid hours and end dates, not just a headline rate.

08The Diesel Desk / WA · residential regional hubs

Local living packages across Western Australia.

Residential positions outside Perth frequently package housing, utility subsidies, regional tax offsets and vehicle allowances. These must be evaluated as total community packages, not just nominal wages.

Pilbara

Karratha · Port Hedland · Newman

Approx. $215k

Residential heavy-diesel signals are among the highest in the market, usually alongside housing support or LAFHA. Treat all benefits as part of the package review.

Kalgoorlie & Goldfields

Gold · nickel · processing

$185k–$200k

Geraldton & Mid-West

Agriculture · mid-tier mining

Approx. $149.4k

Kimberley

Broome · regional operations

$110k–$140k

South West

Bunbury · alumina · manufacturing

$115k–$135k

09The Diesel Desk / WA · compare two benchmarks

Side-by-side comparison.

Choose two permanent roles or the verified FIFO anchor to compare their salary basis and figure. This is a working comparison panel, not a saved list.

Why they are not directly comparable: each benchmark can carry a different employment type, salary basis, role scope, roster and offer condition. Read the figure alongside those terms before deciding which offer is stronger.
